Safety. The akebia in this formula is the single most important safety point on this page. Under the Chinese name 木通, two different plants have been sold: 关木通 (Aristolochia manshuriensis) contains aristolochic acid, which causes irreversible kidney failure and urinary-tract cancer and is the recognised cause of aristolochic acid nephropathy; it is prohibited in China and restricted elsewhere. Only 川木通 or 白木通 from a properly identified and tested source may be used, and a dispenser who cannot say which one is being supplied should not be supplying it. This formula was written for children, and it should not be given to a child without a licensed practitioner. Contains licorice. Amounts are deliberately not given here.
