Borneol bīng piàn · 冰片

Dryobalanops aromatica (natural borneol); also produced synthetically

Nature and flavour. Pungent, bitter, slightly cold; Heart, Lung and Spleen systems.

Used in the materia medica as an aromatic that is traditionally described as awakening the senses and clearing heat; it is almost always used externally or in pills rather than as a stand-alone decoction.

Classical category · no formulas, no dosages, no herb-drug combinations are given.
Safety. Highly volatile and a frequent contact sensitiser; small amounts only. Not for internal use in pregnancy, and never near the eyes. Commercial products may be synthetic borneol or camphor-type substitutes — do not assume they are identical.
