External use: counteracting toxin, killing parasites and dispelling wind to relieve pain

Wasp Nest fēng fáng ·

Vespae Nidus (the nest of Polistes olivaceus (DeGeer), Polistes jokahamae Radoszkowski or related species)

Nature and flavour. Sweet, neutral; some sources class it as slightly toxic. Stomach system.

The paper nest of a social wasp — an insect-built structure, and therefore one of the handful of animal-architecture drugs in the materia medica. Classical texts describe it as counteracting toxin, killing parasites, and dispelling wind to relieve pain. Externally it is recorded for sores, swellings and abscesses, for scrofula, and for ringworm and itchy skin; internally it is recorded for the painful obstruction attributed to wind-damp and for toothache. The material is usually charred or calcined before use. Very little of what is claimed for it has been examined in controlled human studies. The traditional indications here are recorded as traditional, and the honest summary is that this is an old drug with a long recorded use and almost no modern clinical evidence in either direction.

Safety. An animal product, and the first risk has nothing to do with traditional medicine: wasp and hornet material is allergenic. Anyone with a known allergy to wasp or bee venom, or who has ever had a systemic reaction to a sting, should not handle it at all — for that person the exposure is a route to anaphylaxis, and that is not a risk worth taking for a traditional remedy with no clinical evidence behind it. Beyond allergy, sourcing is the weak point: a wild-collected nest may contain larval remains, parasites, moulds, pesticide residue from wherever it was gathered, and material of an unidentified species, and none of that has routine quality control. Some sources class it as slightly toxic. Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding, avoid in children, and do not take it internally outside professional direction. A lump that is growing, an abscess, a swollen gland that will not settle, or a breast infection during breastfeeding each needs a diagnosis before anything is applied to it — these are the classical indications, and every one of them is a condition where waiting is the wrong move.
