泻下药(峻下逐水类)· 有毒根类 · Purgative drug (峻下逐水药 — the drastic, water-expelling branch); a toxic root

Pokeweed Root shāng lù · 商陆

Radix Phytolaccae — the root of Phytolacca acinosa Roxb. (商陆) or of Phytolacca americana L. (美洲商陆, American pokeweed; family Phytolaccaceae).

Nature and flavour. Bitter, cold, toxic. Lung, Spleen, Kidney and Large Intestine systems.

Another drug from the drastic shelf, recorded in the sources for oedema and ascites with abdominal fullness, and used externally for swellings and sores. The classical material is vinegar-processed, and that single fact is a comment on the drug: processing is the tradition's way of saying this root is not safe as it comes out of the ground. The physiological reality behind the classical phrase expelling water is a violent purge that loses fluid, and it does nothing for the heart, kidney or liver disease that produced the fluid in the first place. There is one thing about this plant that is genuinely important in modern medicine, and it is worth stating because it says more than any safety warning could: pokeweed mitogen, extracted from Phytolacca americana, is a standard laboratory reagent used to make lymphocytes divide in immunology research. A plant whose root proteins force immune cells into division is not a plant to eat.

Safety. Poisonous in every part, and most poisonous in the root and in the fresh plant. The toxins are saponins of the phytolaccatoxin group together with the mitogenic glycoprotein. Poisoning begins with burning of the mouth and throat, salivation, nausea and vomiting, moves on to abdominal cramps with watery and sometimes bloody diarrhoea, and in serious cases continues to dizziness, disturbed vision, sweating, low blood pressure, confusion, convulsions and respiratory failure. Fatal poisoning is reported from the fresh root, from root tea, and from the berries. Children are at particular risk, and the single most dangerous thing about this plant is that its root has been mistaken for edible roots — 欧防风, horseradish, 牛蒡, 人参 and others — with fatal results recorded; a root that cannot be identified with certainty should not be eaten. The berries are not food and should not be used to make ink or jam, however traditional that may be in places. The processed drug of the pharmacopoeia is a different thing from the plant in a garden, and a poison that a tradition learned to tame by processing is still a poison. Contraindicated in pregnancy without qualification — it is a traditional abortifacient — and in breastfeeding, in children, and in anyone with heart, kidney or liver disease. Suspected ingestion is a poison-centre or emergency-department matter; take the plant with you.
