Wuyao (Combined Spicebush Root) wū yào · 乌药

Lindera aggregata (root; also cited as Lindera strychnifolia)

Nature and flavour. Pungent, warm; Lung, Spleen, Kidney and Bladder systems.

Classically grouped with the herbs that move Qi and ease pain, and with those that warm the Kidney and Bladder. The traditional texts place it with cold-type pain in the lower abdomen, with hernia-type pain, and with frequent urination in the elderly. What the literature assigns to it is a category of use, not a demonstrated effect, and this entry makes no claim of benefit.

Classical category · no formulas, no dosages, no herb-drug combinations are given.
Safety. Warm and drying, and classically avoided where there is heat, where Qi is depleted, or where Yin is depleted with heat signs. Safety in pregnancy and during breastfeeding is not established, so it should not be taken then. It is one of several roots sold by similar-sounding names; a packet labelled wu yao is not a guarantee of which plant it contains unless a qualified professional has confirmed it. No amount is given here.
