Corydalis Decumbens Tuber xià tiān wú ·

Rhizoma Corydalis Decumbentis — Corydalis decumbens (Thunb.) Pers. (family Papaveraceae), the dried tuber

Nature and flavour. Bitter and slightly acrid, warm. Liver system.

An early-spring plant with a name that describes its harvest window: 夏天无 means nothing by summer, because the aerial parts die back early and the tuber has to be lifted in spring. It quickens the blood, relieves pain, dispels wind and damp, and is recorded for headache, for the aching and numbness of wind-damp obstruction, for pain and swelling after knocks and falls, and in the modern Chinese literature for the limb pain and impaired movement that follow wind-stroke. Its best-studied constituent is not the whole herb but one molecule: the tuber yields tetrahydropalmatine, an isoquinoline alkaloid that also occurs in the related Corydalis yanhusuo and that has been studied on its own as a sedative and analgesic compound. That research is not evidence for the traditional uses of the tuber — the traditional uses are recorded, and the modern clinical evidence for them is limited and is not established.

Safety. This is the item in the batch with the clearest pharmacological reason for caution. Tetrahydropalmatine is sedating: drowsiness, dizziness and slowed reaction time are documented effects, and driving, machinery and alcohol do not mix with it. Liver injury has been reported in association with products containing tetrahydropalmatine, so anyone with liver disease, or with a liver enzyme result that has been raised and never explained, should not take it — and jaundice, dark urine or unusual fatigue while taking it is a reason to stop and be seen. It is avoided in pregnancy and in breastfeeding, and as a blood mover it calls for the same caution with heavy bleeding and with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs. Corydalis tubers are small, are gathered from the wild, and substitution and mislabelling are recorded in the trade; a package without a Latin name is not a reliable identification. Stroke after-effects, persistent headache and chronic joint pain all deserve a diagnosis rather than a herb bought on the strength of a name. Any use belongs under the supervision of a qualified practitioner, and this page deliberately does not say how much to take.
