Blood-invigorating, trauma-healing drug

Dragon's Blood xuè jié · 血竭

Draconis Sanguis (traditionally the red resin of Daemonorops draco Bl., a rattan palm; the same commercial name is also applied to unrelated resins from Dracaena and Croton species)

Nature and flavour. Sweet, salty, neutral. Heart and Liver systems.

A red resin, and one of the few items in the materia medica whose name is pure theatre: 血竭 is dragon's blood, and the resin is exuded by the fruit of a rattan palm after it is bruised or heated. Classical texts describe it as invigorating blood and settling pain, transforming stasis and checking bleeding, and engendering flesh and closing sores; it is recorded externally for wounds, for sores and ulcers that will not close, and for bleeding from a wound, and internally for the pain of blood stasis. Resins of this kind have also been used outside medicine as colouring matter and as a varnish. The identification is the awkward part, and honest entries should say so: several botanically unrelated resins have been traded as dragon's blood — from Daemonorops, from Dracaena species, and from Croton lechleri in South America — and they are different articles with different constituents. What a given sample actually is depends on the supply chain it came through.

Classical category · no formulas, no dosages, no herb-drug combinations are given.
Safety. The mildest item in this batch, and still not one to use on yourself without advice. It is a blood-moving drug, and the classical contraindications put it off limits in pregnancy and in the absence of blood stasis — the texts are explicit that it is not a general tonic for bleeding. Taking it by mouth is not a self-use practice; the internal uses here are recorded as traditional. Externally, resins are recognised contact sensitisers, so a rash where it was applied means stopping, not continuing. The strongest caution is one that applies to any substance put on a wound: a wound that is not closing is information. A non-healing ulcer on the leg or the foot can be vascular, neuropathic or something that needs assessment, and covering it with a resin delays the diagnosis. Material bought outside the regulated supply chain may be a different resin from the one described here, or may have been coloured; buy for identification, not for appearance. Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
