Semen Lini — the dried ripe seed of Linum usitatissimum L. (family Linaceae); the same plant that gives linen fibre and linseed oil.

Nature and flavour. Sweet, neutral. Lung, Liver and Large Intestine systems.

An oily seed living in two traditions at once. In Chinese sources it is a moist laxative for dryness-type constipation, and it is also recorded for the patterns the texts describe as wind-damp with numbness and stiffness, and for dry, scaling skin. In the West the same seed is a food ingredient, a source of alpha-linolenic acid and of lignans, and a bulk laxative in its own right. The mucilage in the husk swells with water and the fibre adds bulk — that is the ordinary explanation of the laxative reputation, and it is a better explanation than the classical one. None of the traditional Chinese indications beyond the bowel are established by evidence. Note that this is not 火麻仁: hemp seed is a different plant and a different drug, and the two oily seeds are regularly confused by name.

Safety. The bulk-forming rule is the important one: this seed swells, and if it is swallowed dry or with too little water it can obstruct. There are published reports of oesophageal and intestinal obstruction from exactly that, and the people at risk are those with a narrowed oesophagus or gut, a stricture, difficulty swallowing, or established severe constipation with impaction — for them this is the wrong remedy. Otherwise the seed is a food and is widely eaten, and the caveats are the ordinary ones. It contains cyanogenic glycosides, linamarin among them, which is why large quantities of raw, crushed seed are a different proposition from a spoonful on bread; heating reduces them, and ordinary culinary use is not the setting in which this becomes a problem. It slows the absorption of whatever else is in the stomach, so it should be taken at a different time from any other medicine a person has been given rather than together with it. It may lower blood glucose, and people taking medicines for diabetes need to know that. The seed carries oestrogenic lignans, and whether that matters in hormone-sensitive conditions or in pregnancy is not established — which is reason enough to avoid it there rather than to test it. Whole seed often passes through undigested; ground seed and whole seed do not behave the same, and the oil is a different product from either.
