Polygonatum odoratum (rhizome)

Nature and flavour. Sweet, slightly cold; Lung and Stomach systems.

Classed as nourishing Yin and moistening dryness, and as generating fluid to relieve thirst. Its place in the classical framework is narrow and consistent: dryness and fluid depletion in the Lung and Stomach — dry throat, dry cough, thirst. It is one of the gentler Yin-nourishing herbs, and unlike many of that group it is not described as cloying to the digestion.

Classical category · no formulas, no dosages, no herb-drug combinations are given.
Safety. The tradition itself cautions against it where there is dampness with phlegm, or where the Spleen is weak with loose stool — a Yin-nourishing herb can make both worse. The raw rhizome and the steamed, processed form are not treated as the same material in traditional practice. Human safety data in pregnancy and breastfeeding are insufficient.
