Cimicifuga rhizome shēng má · 升麻

Cimicifuga foetida

Nature and flavour. Pungent, slightly sweet, slightly cold; Lung, Spleen, Stomach and Large Intestine systems.

A cooling exterior herb with two classical roles: venting rashes and clearing heat, and the upward 'raising' action used in compound formulas for the sinking and prolapse presentations of the classical framing.

Classical category · no formulas, no dosages, no herb-drug combinations are given.
Safety. Not a self-care herb. Reports of liver injury are documented for the North American relative black cohosh (Actaea racemosa); Chinese shengma is a different species of the same genus, and the same class of caution is usually applied. Classical sources list it as contraindicated once a rash has fully surfaced, and advise caution in pregnancy.
