Japanese Climbing Fern Spores hǎi jīn shā ·

Lygodii Spora (Lygodium japonicum (Thunb.) Sw.)

Nature and flavour. Sweet, salty, cold; Bladder and Small Intestine systems.

The drug is the spore of a climbing fern, not the leaf. Classically described as promoting urination, relieving strangury and easing pain; the classical texts use it particularly for the pattern they call stone strangury, where gravel or stones are held to obstruct the urinary tract, and for the griping pain said to accompany it.

Classical category · no formulas, no dosages, no herb-drug combinations are given.
Safety. Cold in nature; classically avoided where there is no damp-heat and in cold deficiency of the Spleen and Stomach. Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding — reliable human safety data are lacking. Confirmed urinary stones, blood in the urine, or pain with fever are matters for medical investigation; this entry does not claim the herb dissolves stones, and that claim is not established by reliable human evidence.
