Common Scouring Rush mù zéi · 木贼

Equiseti Hiemalis Herba (Equisetum hyemale L.)

Nature and flavour. Sweet, bitter, neutral; Lung and Liver systems.

Classically described as dispersing wind-heat, brightening the eyes and removing corneal opacity, and as an astringent that stops bleeding. The classical sources also use it for bleeding haemorrhoids and for heavy uterine bleeding.

性味归经。甘、苦，平；归肺、肝经。

传统记载为疏散风热、明目退翳、止血，古籍亦用于痔血与崩漏下血。

Classical category · no formulas, no dosages, no herb-drug combinations are given.
Safety. Equisetum species have been reported to contain thiaminase, an enzyme that breaks down thiamine, and that is one reason prolonged internal use is not advised. Classically avoided where eye complaints come from deficiency rather than wind-heat. Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding; insufficient reliable human safety data. Unexplained bleeding should be investigated rather than managed with an astringent herb.
