This herb carries a documented modern safety concern rather than a historical one: Senecio species commonly contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which are toxic to the liver and are a recognised cause of liver injury worldwide. Do not take it internally on the strength of a traditional indication alone. Avoid if liver function is abnormal or liver disease is present, and avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Even external use should not be prolonged or applied over large areas of broken skin.
