Wind-damp

Sangzhi (Mulberry Twig) sāng zhī ·

Morus alba (young branch)

Nature and flavour. Slightly bitter, neutral; Liver system.

Grouped with the herbs that dispel wind-damp and benefit the joints, and the texts are more specific than usual: this one is associated with the joints of the upper limbs, in contrast to herbs aimed at the lower back and legs. It is the pruned twig of the mulberry tree, the tree that feeds the silkworm, and it is among the mildest entries in this section. The traditional uses are categories recorded in the literature; they are not established by modern research.

Classical category · no formulas, no dosages, no herb-drug combinations are given.
Safety. Low risk, and that is worth saying plainly because the rest of this section is not low risk. Two cautions remain. The first is sourcing: a woody twig sold as medicine is not grown to food standards, and mulberry trees are sprayed and grow beside roads, so surface contamination is a real question that no label answers. The second is blood sugar: products from this tree, the leaf more than the twig, have been studied for effects on blood glucose, and anyone on diabetes medicine should treat that as a reason to ask a pharmacist first rather than as a reason to expect an effect. Safety in pregnancy is not established. No amount is given here.
