Damp-draining; oedema-relieving

Field Cricket xī shuài ·

Gryllidae — dried body of the field cricket (recorded in materia medica under several species names)

Nature and flavour. Acrid, salty, warm; slightly toxic. Bladder and Small Intestine systems.

The dried cricket is recorded in the materia medica as promoting urination and dispersing swelling, mainly for oedema and difficult urination. Unlike the cold plant herbs that dominate this category, it is classified as warm — a reminder that the traditional group of water-draining herbs is neither one temperature nor one mechanism. It is seldom used in contemporary practice, and its traditional indications are not established by reliable human evidence.

Classical category · no formulas, no dosages, no herb-drug combinations are given.
Safety. An insect drug, counted as slightly toxic and warm in nature. Listed as contraindicated in pregnancy in Chinese materia medica; avoid in breastfeeding and in children, and avoid where there is deficiency with heat. Reliable human safety data are lacking. As with other insect drugs, identity, collection and storage are not standardised outside the regulated supply chain. Not for self-use. Oedema, reduced urine output or difficult urination are matters for medical assessment.
