Fluorite (Purple Fluor Spar) zǐ shí yīng · 紫石英

Nature and flavour. Sweet; warm; Heart, Lung and Kidney systems.

A mineral classed as calming the spirit by weight, and unusual among the spirit-calming minerals in being warm: traditionally described as settling the spirit, warming the Lung and calming breathlessness, and warming the womb. It appears in the classical literature for palpitations and fright, for breathlessness of the cold type, and for the "cold womb" infertility presentation of the classical texts. Its warmth is the reason it is not interchangeable with the cold, heavy tranquilising minerals.

性味归经。甘，温；归心、肺、肾经。

矿物药，归类为重镇安神；在重镇安神药中是少见的温性者：传统认为镇心安神、温肺平喘、暖宫。古典文献用于心悸惊痫、虚寒喘咳以及「宫冷不孕」之证。其温性正是它不能与同类中寒凉质重之品互相替代的原因。

Safety. The decisive point is its composition: 紫石英 is fluorite, calcium fluoride, and fluoride in excess is a well-characterised poison — chronic excessive intake causes dental and skeletal fluorosis. That is a modern toxicological fact rather than a traditional opinion, and it is why this entry does not present the drug as a long-term tonic. Do not confuse it with quartz: 紫石英 is fluorite, 白石英 is quartz (silicon dioxide), and the two are different drugs with different traditional actions. As with all mineral drugs, arsenic and heavy-metal content depends on the source and requires assay. The classical and modern texts disagree about use in pregnancy, and where the sources disagree this site does not recommend a mineral drug in pregnancy. Human safety data in breastfeeding are insufficient. Not for self-directed use.
