Boswellia carterii (gum resin)

Nature and flavour. Acrid and bitter, warm; Heart, Liver and Spleen systems.

A tree gum resin that came into Chinese medicine along the overland trade routes. In the classical framework it moves blood and qi to address pain and swelling, and is used to support the closing of sores and wounds. It is a processed resin, not a food. Research on Boswellia extracts is ongoing; no clinical benefit is claimed here.

Classical category · no formulas, no dosages, no herb-drug combinations are given.
Safety. A resin rather than a kitchen ingredient: it can irritate the stomach, and sensitisation with topical use is described. Traditionally avoided in pregnancy. Do not use it on your own.
