Safety. This entry carries an explicit toxicity warning. The root contains quinolizidine alkaloids (matrine and oxymatrine type), and poisoning has been reported in the literature: nausea and repeated vomiting, abdominal pain, dizziness, sweating, tremor, confusion, and in severe cases seizures and respiratory depression. Reported poisonings are usually linked to taking far too much, to prolonged use, or to confused identity — including substitution with related Sophora species. It should be used only under the direction of a qualified practitioner who is working within the limits set by the official materia medica and who knows the supply. Not for self-medication, not for children, and strictly avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Anyone who has taken it and feels nauseated, dizzy, tremulous or confused should stop and seek medical care.
