Chinese Lobelia bàn biān lián · 半边莲

Lobelia chinensis

Nature and flavour. Sweet, bland, cold; Heart, Small Intestine and Lung systems.

Traditionally used for heat-toxin patterns with swelling — most often described in the classical literature for snake and insect bite, sores and abscesses, and for promoting urination in oedema. The traditional actions are 'clearing heat and resolving toxin' and 'promoting urination and reducing swelling'.

性味归经。甘、淡，寒；归心、小肠、肺经。

传统用于热毒所致的肿毒，古典文献记载尤多用于蛇虫咬伤、疮痈肿毒，并用于水肿时利水消肿。传统功效概括为“清热解毒、利水消肿”。

Classical category · no formulas, no dosages, no herb-drug combinations are given.

Safety. Not a home remedy. The plant contains lobelia-type alkaloids; nausea, vomiting, salivation, dizziness and tremor are the reported effects of taking too much, and large amounts have been associated with more serious toxicity. It is not safe for an untrained person to decide how much to take: its active alkaloids act on nicotinic receptors. Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding, in children, and in anyone with kidney or heart disease. Snakebite is a medical emergency — the traditional reputation of this herb is not a reason to delay antivenom or hospital assessment. Clinical evidence for the traditional indications is limited and this page makes no benefit claim.
