A related line appears in the postpartum chapter for abdominal pain after childbirth. It is the formula in this batch whose ingredients are closest to food.

Safety. Three ingredients, and two of them are things a person eats anyway. That is precisely why this entry needs its safety notes written out rather than skipped — being edible is not the same as being appropriate here, and a formula made of food is the one most likely to be read as carrying no risk at all. The word to stop on is 疝. In the classical line it names a pattern of abdominal and flank pain; today 疝 means a hernia, and a hernia is the reason this paragraph exists. An irreducible groin lump that is tender, or one accompanied by vomiting, distension or the inability to pass stool or flatus, is strangulation until a surgeon says otherwise, and ischaemia of the contained bowel is a matter of hours. Femoral hernias strangulate more often than inguinal ones and are more common in women. The same region produces other lumps that must be told apart: lymph nodes, hydrocele, varicocele, a femoral pseudoaneurysm, epididymitis — and testicular torsion, which has its own clock measured in hours and which can present with pain felt in the groin or lower abdomen rather than in the scrotum. This library records these as what a clinician carries; it offers no plan for a groin lump or for acute abdominal pain. Then the second setting the text names: pain after childbirth. Postpartum abdominal pain has its own list, and it is not a dietary list — postpartum haemorrhage, endometritis, wound infection, mastitis, and, beyond the abdomen, pre-eclampsia presenting after delivery and sepsis. Pain with fever after delivery points toward those and away from food. This library states that direction and offers nothing further. Now the three materials, each with its own record. 羊肉 is red meat. The IARC classification places processed meat in Group 1 and red meat in Group 2A, and that classification describes the strength of the evidence for a hazard, not the size of the risk — which is the honest way to state it. Red meat is also the antigen in alpha-gal syndrome, an allergy acquired after certain tick bites whose symptoms appear three to six hours after eating, so a reaction often lands in the night and is not connected back to dinner. Undercooked meat carries food-borne infection, and mutton is a real load of saturated fat and of haem iron, which matters to someone with haemochromatosis. 生姜 is fresh ginger; it is not 干姜, which is the dried form and has its own entry. Reports of an interaction with anticoagulants exist and the findings do not agree with one another, so this library records that reports exist and that they are inconsistent; gastric irritation from ginger is also recorded. 当归 is Angelica sinensis, in the carrot family — a family in which misidentification during foraging is genuinely dangerous, and in which water hemlock is lethal. It contains furanocoumarins, which photosensitise, and coumarin-type constituents; case reports of an interaction with warfarin exist, and this library records case reports as case reports rather than as an established effect. 当归 is not 欧当归 and not 白芷. Reliable safety data for pregnancy and breastfeeding are lacking, and 当归 is traditionally listed among the herbs to be cautious with in pregnancy; this library does not suggest use in either state. Chinese-language literature reports observations of this class of formula, mostly small and methodologically limited; this library records that such studies exist, not that benefit has been established.
