Safety. Sweating is the symptom this formula is aimed at, and that is worth pausing on: sweating is also a sign that belongs to a list of conditions no astringent formula should be sitting on top of. Drenching night sweats with weight loss and fever are a classical tuberculosis presentation; sweating with tremor, weight loss and palpitations suggests thyrotoxicosis; cold sweating with chest pain, or sweating with faintness in a person with diabetes, can be a cardiac or hypoglycaemic emergency; persistent sweats in someone with a cancer history deserve assessment. The honest position is that a formula for 表虚不固 is a traditional pattern category, not a diagnosis, and the pattern cannot be assigned until other causes have been excluded. - The ingredient that needs the clearest explanation is 麻黄根, ephedra root. It is the root of an Ephedra species, the same genus as 麻黄, the ephedra herb.
