Loquat Leaf pí pá yè · 枇杷叶

Eriobotrya japonica (Eriobotryae Folium)

Nature and flavour. Bitter and slightly cold; Lung and Stomach systems.

Traditionally classed as clearing the Lung and stopping cough, and as directing rebellious Qi downward to settle nausea. Recorded for hot-type cough with congested breathing, and for nausea and vomiting attributed to stomach heat with thirst and restlessness. Classical preparation requires brushing off the fine down on the underside of the leaf, because leaving it on is said to irritate the throat and provoke cough.

性味归经。苦，微寒；归肺、胃经。

传统归类为清肺止咳、降逆止呕。古籍用于肺热咳嗽、气逆喘急，以及胃热口渴、烦热所致的恶心呕吐。传统炮制要求刷去叶背绒毛，认为不去毛反致咽喉刺激而加重咳嗽。

Classical category · no formulas, no dosages, no herb-drug combinations are given.

Safety. Slightly cold — classically unsuitable for wind-cold cough or for cold-type vomiting. The preparation point is practical rather than formal: the down on the leaf underside is mechanically irritating. Loquat seeds are known to contain cyanogenic glycosides; whether leaf material as traditionally prepared carries a comparable risk has not been established, and this page does not claim it is risk-free. Safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding is not established. The leaf should not be confused with loquat syrups sold as food products, which are not the same thing.
