化痰止咳平喘药 · Phlegm-resolving, cough and breathing

Hogfennel Root qián hú · 前胡

Peucedanum praeruptorum

Nature and flavour. Bitter, acrid, slightly cold; Lung system.

Classed as directing Qi downward and dissolving phlegm, and as dispersing wind and clearing heat. Traditional use covers cough with thick phlegm and congested breathing, and the early stage of an exterior wind-heat pattern with cough.

性味归经。苦、辛，微寒；归肺经。

归类为降气化痰、散风清热。传统用于痰热壅肺之咳嗽痰多、气逆喘满，以及外感风热初起兼见咳嗽者。

Classical category · no formulas, no dosages, no herb-drug combinations are given.

Safety. Contains coumarin-type compounds (the praeruptorins), which show measurable activity in laboratory studies; what that means for people using the root has not been established in clinical trials. Slightly cold — not for cough attributed to deficiency-cold of the Lung. Safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding is not established.
