Because the safety data are as thin as the efficacy data, the honest position is caution rather than reassurance — absence of reported harm is not evidence of safety when a drug has been little studied. Identify the species before using any part of it; several Elaeagnus species circulate under related names, and the fruit, which is eaten, is a different part with a different record from the leaf. Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Anyone with a persistent cough, with breathlessness, or with blood in the sputum needs conventional assessment first — blood in the sputum in particular is not a symptom to manage with an unstudied leaf.
