Location. In the mouth, on the floor of the mouth, at the midpoint of the frenulum of the tongue; the point is taken with the mouth open and the tip of the tongue raised to the palate.
The name means sea spring, an image of a source of fluid, and it is one of the small group of points located on the floor of the mouth rather than on the surface of the body. It is a point outside the fourteen channels. Published sources differ slightly on whether the point is the midpoint of the frenulum or the small depression just behind it, so the site is better read as the midline of the frenulum region than as one exact spot. Classical sources record pricking here to release a drop of blood, and later literature discusses the point in the context of the tongue and of thirst. The classical record is thin, the reported effects are not established by modern research, and this entry makes no claim of benefit.
