Location. On the anterior aspect of the thigh, 1.5 cun on either side of Liangqiu (ST34); two points on each limb.
The name is the first thing to clear up: kuangu is the hip bone, but this point is not at the hip. It sits on the front of the thigh just above the knee, medial and lateral to Liangqiu, and the name is one of several in the extra points where the label and the site do not match; it is also recorded under the name tigu. It is a point outside the fourteen channels. The two points lie over the vastus muscles on either side of the rectus femoris tendon, and branches of the descending lateral circumflex femoral vessels run in this area, which is the anatomical reason the site is described as two points rather than one. Later literature discusses it in the context of pain of the leg and of a painful, swollen knee. The classical record is thin, the reported effects are not established by modern research, and this entry makes no claim of benefit.
