The Twenty-Four Solar Terms · 2026
The solar terms are a letter the Chinese wrote to time: the year cut into twenty-four pieces, each with its own name, its own natural signs, its own way of living. They guided farming three thousand years ago; today they still remind you to dress warm when it is cold, eat light when it is damp, sleep early, and rise with the light.
The terms divide the year by the sun's position on the ecliptic — an astronomical measure. Equinoxes balance day and night; the solstices are the year's longest and shortest days.
Each term carries three "hou" marking the visible changes in plants, insects and birds — a very early systematic record of phenology.
Ultimately the terms land in daily life — what to eat, what to wear, when to go home early: everyday expressions of the TCM principle of adapting to the time.
TCM never separates the body from the season. The classical text's "regulating the spirit through the four qi" is about living differently in each season. The solar terms are here not because they cure anything, but because they are the most everyday doorway into the idea that a person corresponds with heaven and earth.
